Can a natural health care product really be an effective alternative to conventional medicine?
When faced with an illness or preventing one, doctors have an array of options to them. One of them is to recommend the use of over the counter medication, especially in more severe cases.
Sadly, some of these drugs are quite expensive and since people cannot always afford the medication, or perhaps they would actively prefer a more approach to healing, then alternative techniques are sometimes turned to.
Generally alternative health products are dietary or supplement related, and this article does not look at the myriad other alternative health treatments available like, Reiki, acupuncture and meditation.
Everyone knows what dieting is. There are few people in the western world that have not been on a diet or restricted certain foods for one reason or another. More recently there have been a number of diets that restricts one type of food to replace it with another. A good example of this is eating food that is high in protein and fat rather than those rich in carbohydrates.
In more recent times, as the medical community started to understand the impact of a lack of certain dietary essentials, they started to encourage changes to the populations diet.
Supplements have changed over the years, from being a way of adding essential nutrients when a person was lacking, to helping with numerous conditions like lowering cholesterol, gaining or losing weight, enhancing ones sex drive and treating anxiety disorder.
Did you know that many of the herbal extracts, herbal teas and the supplements we see on the shelves of our health stores have been used for centuries by traditional healers?
The Food and Drugs Administration or FDA oversees manufacturing, safety, and product information, which include the claims a dietary supplement can make. Although the standards are not as strict compared to those given to drugs.
So, a dietary supplement labeled as a treatment for a disease or condition would be thought of as unauthorized, and so illegal. This is generally because clinical trials have not been carried out to prove the claims.
It is important that if you are considering taking supplements together with other medication you consult with your physician. The ingredients in both may interact, or cause the medication to work less effectively, or indeed too effectively.
But the advice to anyone who wants to stay fit and healthy is simple.
1. Have a long hard look at your diet and ask yourself if you are getting enough fruit and vegetables (preferably raw of lightly cooked), protein, carbohydrates and fiber and keeping the amount of processed foods, sugar and salt to a sensible level.
2. Are you exercising every week, and are you doing it for long enough and vigorously enough?
3. Combat stresses in your life by planning ahead.
There are many that suggest that all you need is a good diet to keep healthy, and although their point is fair, a good diet is getting harder and harder for people to maintain.
The pace of life is hectic at the best of times, and often being able to squeeze in the preparation and time to eat a healthy meal is not seen as possible. When this is the case essential nutrients can be missed from the diet as we rely more and more on quick and easy processed foods. This is when the use of a natural health care product like a dietary supplement may be advisable to bolster any deficiencies in the diet.

The Paxil CR pills are the highest dose sold, and can cause severe withdrawal symptoms, according to Dr Stephen Ellen, a psychiatrist from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. "If it is true that patients might have gotten dummy pills without knowing it, it is outrageous," he said.
According to Glaxo, the FDA knew about the problem and approved the limited recall plan, but FDA spokeswoman, Susan Cruzan, told Bloomberg that she did not know the details of the September Paxil CR recall.
That incident is even more outrageous because back on March 4, 2005, the government cited Glaxo for the exact similarly wrongdoing when the FDA and the Parish of Justice initiated the seizure of Paxil CR tablets after Glaxo failed to meet the standards laid out by the FDA to ensure product safety, strength, quality and purity.
Among the violations noted then by the FDA, was the finding that the tablets could split apart and patients could receive a portion of the tablets that lacks any active ingredient, or alternatively a member that contains active ingredient and does not have the intended controlled-release effect.
The seizures followed warrants issued by the U.S. District Courts for the District of Puerto Rico and the Eastern District of Tennessee and were executed by the U.S. Marshals Ministration at Glaxo's Cidra, Puerto Rico manufacturing facility, its Knoxville, Tennessee distribution facility, and a Puerto Rico distribution center.
The FDA said that Glaxo had voluntarily recalled some of the affected lots of Paxil CR but had losed status to recall all of the affected lots and that failure resulted in the seizures by federal authorities.
"FDA and the Department of Justice will not allow drug manufacturers to ignore our sky-high public health standards for drug manufacturing," said John Taylor, FDA Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs in a statement released by the agency at the hour.
"Once we discover a company is not following the standards, which were created to ensure safety and quality, we expect them to correct the deficiencies in an expedited manner," Mr Taylor stated.
"American consumers," he said, "deserve the best health care products on the stall today, and companies that are not adhering to these standards cannot assure FDA and American consumers of the quality of their products."
A year and a half following, on April 28, 2005, the FDA announced that Glaxo had signed a consent decree to correct the manufacturing deficiencies at its Cidra, Puerto Rico facility.
However, the consent decree required Glaxo to post a penal bond of $650,000,000 contingent upon either successfully reconditioning the drugs seized in March 2005, or destroying them and paying the costs to the government.
To resolve the matter, Glaxo supposedly recalled all of the lots of Paxil CR made before November 2004, and agreed to an independent quality review of the manufacturing.

But some studies have found that a low purine gout diet has no effect on uric acid levels. Most likely one reason is because most uric acid in the body is made in the liver from purine molecules of DNA and RNA, and not from the purines in foods and beverages. Another reason may be that the problem for a gout sufferer is not that he/she is producing too much uric acid but that he/she is not excreting enough.
There is another cause of gout theory, which is that excess uric acid (hyperuricemia) is the result of insulin resistance, the pre type 2 diabetes condition. Insulin resistance in gout has been the subject of many studies. Simply put, insulin resistance is the condition where the cells become more resistant to allowing insulin to deliver glucose (mainly broken down from carbohydrate in foods) to them, for the purpose of energy creation. It's as if the jailer refuses to open the door of the cell. It's one of the causes of excess insulin. Excess insulin has been found in a number of studies to inhibit uric acid excretion as well as causing other problems.
To examine whether a diet could affect the markers that show insulin resistance exists, and
lower uric acid levels, researchers in South Africa put 13 males, all gout sufferers, on a diet governed by three cardinal rules of the Zone diet, the well-known diet book written in the 1990's by Barry Sears PhD.
RULES
Calories were restricted to 1,600 a day: 40% from carbohydrates, 30% from protein and 30% from mono and poly unsaturated fats.
Refined carbohydrate foods were swapped for complex carbohydrate foods. i.e. they ate complex carbohydrates, not refined carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates can be found in foods made from whole grains, (eg. whole grain flours and products made from them), and in many vegetables, low sugar fruits and beans.
Refined and simple carbohydrates are found in foods made from refined grains (for example refined flours which are the basis for pasta, breads, cakes, biscuits (cookies) pies, pastries); white rice; and most cereals. And notably from sugars with the exception of fruit sugar,(fructose) and galactose. Simple carbohydrates include corn and other syrups, table sugar and honey; candies (sweets); processed foods with added sugar; and some fruits and vegetables.
Complex carbohydrates are lower on the Glycemic Index (GI) scale than refined carbohydrates because they have a slower effect on blood glucose, and so the response of insulin to blood glucose is slower and more moderate. Insulin is much more responsive to refined and simple carbohydrates.
There isn't space in this article to explain more about the difference between complex and refined carbohydrates. If you're not sure, the subject is easily researched on the Internet. For example, do an Internet search for "Glycemic Index," or "Glycemic Load.
