I`m even starting to appreciate the taste of water, no wonder my parents don`t understand why I won`t sit down and have a family dinner instead of making my own food. When looking at foods, we look at the protein content before anything else. We even know the difference between oatmeal, rolled oats, and steel oats.

Pssst, want to positively do something about your High Blood Pressure? Get yourself a pooch and walk it!
Seriously, this is not a wind up nor is it a reverse promotion for the Canine Defence League (or whatever). It is genuine recommendation for those who suffer with High Blood Pressure and want to do something positive about it in a natural manner.
I suffer from High Blood Pressure. I keep banging on about it in a number of articles because in a great many ways (mine probably included if I am brutally honest), something can be done about and it may (note MAY, not DEFINITELY) have been avoidable.
But I digress; this article is about what can be done about High Blood Pressure (HBP or Hypertension) not about how I managed to get it.
There are two options to consider when you are diagnosed with High Blood Pressure.
Firstly you can sit there and go Woe is me, how many tablets do I have to take and at what part in the proceedings will impotence hit me? Us guys like to get our priorities right ?
Secondly you can sit up, re evaluate how you got into that position in the first place and then try and see if you can do something about it. The latter path is the one yours truly decided upon and hence we find ourselves discussing the merits and relative advantages of getting a mutt!
In my case the BP readings were fairly high (try 216 over 160! 120 over 80, god how I used to fantasise about that) and as such Drug therapy was the immediate no brainer in the first instance but once that came under control and the levels dropped it was possible to look at other complimentary measures to run alongside the tablets.
One year down the line from my initial diagnosis and the BP levels were manageable, I had managed to lose some weight. I could have lost the weight sooner but my self discipline for diets has always been awful but again, I digress.
Increased exercise was the next part of the rehabilitation plan and though I had always been keen on walking and getting outside for exercise, again my lousy self discipline always managed to get in the way of any constructive resolution.
This whole narrative might sound like the immediate problem was my own lack of self will and discipline and in many ways that is true. I admire those fanatical enthusiasts who can be seen pounding the streets at 6.30 am every day before they go off to work. My own view on this has always been to try and incorporate some form of longer lasting therapy that in my case was more self sustainable allowing for my own weaknesses.
Now the question may be asked at this point is how serious was I about getting my HBP down and under manageable levels? I have never been more serious about anything else in my life as to be totally honest I am not too wild about departing this mortal coil well before my anointed time.
My own view on this whole exercise was that my anti HBP regime had to be able to be sustainable AND scaleable therefore meaning that the lifestyle / approach would still be on track if I found myself laid up with any form of illness and /or accident.
So, increased exercise as well as change of diet, eating, work habits etc was the order of the day.
Hence we find our self with the situation with a dog. Having lived with dogs all throughout my childhood, I was aware of the companionship that my son would feel if we had one for our family but also I was keenly aware of the responsibility that comes along with having a dog!
They need feeding, looking after andplenty of exercise.
Now we are the proud owners of a Black Labrador / Border collie first cross 50 lbs of fun, fur and mayhem called Elmo. He specialises in all of the things that dogs do best. He eats as much as he can get his paws on, he then makes sure that as much as possible is then manufactured out the other end as often as possible and in the most inconsiderate of places! He chews anything and everything he can get his jaws round, nothing is safe, nothing is sacred and one of these days my eight year old son will get the message not to leave toys lying around the place unattended.
Lastly he is demanding about being taken out and this is where we find the missing link in my Anti HBP Therapy! As the day goes by his whole demeanour and attitude becomes more intense until finally if you havent got the hint by evening time he enters into what can only be described by US Sports Commentators as his Hurry up Offence. He comes and sits in front of you, rests his head on your legs and doesnt move. He just looks at you with that expression that makes it perfectly clear that either it is exercise time or he is going to leave large amounts of canine saliva all over your trousers, shorts, anything in fact that you happen to be wearing at the time!
With a persuasive argument like that it is difficult to refuse and hence I find my High Blood Pressure reducing to manageable proportions, my weight dropping and I am also now in the position of being able to review and reduce (in certain cases) the level of medication that I need to help control my blood pressure.
All by and large down to getting a pooch!
Now if I could do something about the chewing.next time he destroys the Satellite remote (again), he gets it..

I recently had to take a physical and was told I could not eat for at least 6 hours before they did my bloodwork. I ended up missing lunch, and didnt eat for about 10 hours. When the nurse started my bloodwork, she couldnt get a vein. I passed out 3 times and when she took my blood pressure when I finally came to, it was 60 over 40.
How close to fatal is that.

Our liver plays a major role in our body. Not only is it the largest internal organ we have, it also stores nutrients such as certain vitamins, minerals, and iron, and plays a role in synthesizing and managing levels of certain chemicals and proteins in the body, such as cholesterol, hormones, and sugars. It helps the body digest food by producing a substance called bile, which is stored in the gallbladder. When we take substances into our bodies such as alcohol, or the least obvious such as medications, our liver must work on removing its toxic properties for us. All of this work can often tax our liver. But there is a natural way to help strengthen your liver and its through the herb milk thistle. Milk thistle is a plant that is native to the Mediterranean region. Herbalists have used it for thousands of years. The plant has many names including Mary thistle and holy thistle, but its Latin name is Silybum marianum. The milk thistles stem is tall, branched and furrowed but not spiny. The large, alternate leaves are waxy-lobed, toothed and thorny, as in other genera of thistle. The lower leaves are cauline (attached to the stem without petiole). The upper leaves have a clasping base. They have large, disc-shaped pink-to-purple, rarely white, solitary flower heads at the end of the stem. The flowers consist of tubular florets. The phyllaries under the flowers occur in many rows, with the outer row with spine-tipped lobes and apical spines. The fruit is a black achene with a white pappus. Increasing research is being undertaken on the physiological effects, therapeutic properties and possible medical uses of milk thistle. What makes milk thistle so medicinal? It is an active compound called silymarin. Silymarin, a term that is often interchangeably used with milk thistle, can be extracted from the seeds. The silymarin is used to prepare capsules, extracts, and infusions (strong teas). Silmarin is an antioxidant or free radical scavenger. Skin care products often contain silymarin because it antioxidant activity may reduce the risk for skin cancer risk. Silymarin also provides protection against different stages of UVB-induced carcinogenesis. We know silymarin or milk thistle as the liver protector and it does this by promoting the growth of new liver cells and by inhibiting lipid peroxidation. Silymarin is also used against HIV and studies indicate that silymarin is helping decrease endogenous insulin overproduction and the need for exogenous insulin administration. Silymarin has also anti-atherosclerotic activity, by inhibiting the expression of adhesion molecules. It is also used in the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis B and C. Silymarin or milk thistle is also a gentle and mild laxative. This is due to its ability to increase bile secretion and flow in the intestinal tract. This herb can have actions ranging from lubrication and softening of the stools to a mild laxative effect. Milk Thistle is also a Demulcent, meaning that it soothes and moistens the mucus membranes. Being a demulcent, it also greatly softens and moistens the skin. Patients with skin problems ranging from acne to severe eczema have reported a clearing of skin and a noticeable glow and radiance to the skin quality. Besides benefiting our liver, Milk Thistle is also known to: - Lowering cholesterol levels - Reducing insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes who also have cirrhosis - Reduce the growth of cancer cells in breast, cervical, and prostate cancers. - Reduce the effects of a hangover. Milk Thistle can be taken in a capsule form or one can make tea of it. To make tea is different than making your other types of herbal tea. You cannot make a medicinal cup of tea out of milk thistle seed and water alone. The active compound silymarin, is alcohol soluble, which means it is not extracted in water effectively - this is why capsules are more highly recommended. But, if you are set on making milk thistle tea, your best bet is to find a high quality extract, heat up a cup of water to near boiling, and then add the extract to the water. There are no known contra-indications to Milk Thistle supplements. There is, however, a caution for HIV patients, because many medications taken by individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS (PHAs) - such as protease inhibitors and non-nukes are processed by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 which is decreased by Silymarin. The suggested dose of milk thistle is generally 12 to 15 grams of dried herb (200 to 400 mg silymarin) per day or silymarin-phosphatidylcholine complex 100 to 200 mg two times per day. For liver protection, 120 mg silymarin (about 2 capsules) two times per day. For liver damage from alcohol, drugs, or chemicals, the recommended dosage of silymarin-phosphatidylcholine should be increased from two times per day to three times per day. Dosage should be adjusted by an adults or childs weight. Most herbal dosages for adults are calculated on the basis of a 150 lb (70 kg) adult. Therefore, if the child weighs 50 lb (20 to 25 kg), the appropriate dose of milk thistle for this child would be 1/3 of the adult dosage. So does your liver need a tune-up? My cystolic pressure is almost always high or borderline and diastolic is usually arount 60 to 65. I amy currently taking 150 mg. of Atenolol daily and still have problems.

From your description, it seems that you have Isolated Systolic Hypertension. I would be a bit concerned about it, for if your diastolic pressure is normal and your systolic is high, you very well could have a developing problem. The greater the difference between the systolic and diastolic (what is known as pulse pressure), the harder each pulse is on your artery walls.
This condition often comes from inflammation in the arteries themselves. This inflammation stiffens the artery walls and is considered to be an indication of artery damage already present.
If your systolic is borderline high, then its around 150? 160? With a diastolic of 60 or 65, thats a pretty hefty pulse pressure, and I would think that youd want to do a few things about it:
1. Do tell your doctor about it and see if he can prescribe a different hypertension medication, perhaps a slow-acting nitrate, or perhaps felodipine or ramipril (or both of these), all of which have been shown effective against Isolated Systolic Hypertension, the kind that you apparently have.
2. Change your lifestyle, especially your diet. If you havent already, you must cut out salt and alcohol. You must also lose weight. Now, Im not saying that you are excessively heavy, I dont know, but Ill bet you could stand to lose a few pounds. That will help, too.
Some years ago my doc told me that hed like me to lose a few pounds, and I thought he was being excessively picky. I am 5 8 and I weighed 160 pounds, only two pounds over what had been considered my ideal weight.
Well, several years later, for other reasons I did lose weight.
